FIR stands with the Cuban people
13. Juli 2026
For decades, the FIR and its member federations have stood in solidarity with the Cuban people against the U.S. sanctions policy—which violates international law—and is supported by the nationalist forces of the “Cuban exiles” in Florida. In line with the principles enshrined in its Statute, particularly its commitment to peace, international law, the sovereignty of peoples and international solidarity, and with the Resolution adopted at the XVIII FIR Congress in Sofia, the FIR reiterates its solidarity with the Cuban People and calls for an end to the embargo against Cuba.
Time and again, Cuba has had to endure military and violent provocations that restrict its sovereignty and international trade at the hands of the U.S. military. For years, the UN General Assembly has condemned the U.S. sanctions policy with overwhelming majority. Just recently, there was another vote in which 136 member states—including numerous European countries—condemned the U.S. blockade against Cuba, which violates international law. Only eight countries, including Ukraine, sided with the U.S. However, instead of accepting this vote by the international community, the U.S. delegation brazenly claimed that responsibility for Cuba’s economic and social situation lies solely with the government in Havana.
But the people know better. In many countries, there are solidarity committees against the economic strangulation of Cuba. In the coming days and weeks, protests will take place worldwide under the slogan “Unblock Cuba!” They are calling for an end to the inhumane blockade policy, which particularly affects the most vulnerable members of society, because not only energy sources but even medicines are no longer allowed to be delivered to the country. They stand in solidarity with Cuba, which is additionally threatened by military escalation from the Trump administration.
The FIR recalls its demand it stands for many years: “Hands off Cuba! Solidarity with the people of Cuba!” The FIR Executive Committee, together with the FIR member federations, is committed to this goal..
